October Portland InFARMation ‘Vote With Your Dollars’
Do you know how much Small Family farms and ranches rely on us for their livelihood? Join us for the second of three in our Portland InFARMation Fall Series on ‘Becoming an Educated Eater.’ This will be a fun and informative night where you’ll hear from a panel of local producers and experts who will start an open and honest conversation about keeping your money in the local economy, the financial impacts of supporting farmers markets and CSAs, and the importance of shortening the supply chain. Have a beer (or non-alcoholic beverage), participate in this important conversation, and walk away with more insight on the financial realities of local farm and farm-related businesses.

James Just, Pumpkin Ridge Gardens: Pumpkin Ridge Gardens near North Plains is the oldest, continuous CSA in the area. James and partner Polly Gottesman have been year round farmers for well over two decades, and have built a loyal, committed base of farm members. The 50-week CSA, along with some Farmers Market sales, have allowed them to be profitable on a very small piece of land. They have been building the soil with organic techniques since 1989.
Heather Havens, Concentrates, Inc.: Concentrates began in 1938 as a buyer’s co-op for local farmers, farm supply stores and feed mills who wanted to take advantage of their combined buying power. They are now the Pacific Northwest’s oldest family-run supplier of agricultural products specializing in organic soil amendments, fertilizers, feeds, minerals, and salts. Heather, the General Manager, expanded and highlighted the products and services for the growing number of small and mid-sized organic producers on the West coast. She has a BS in Agriculture from OSU, was involved in the creation of the OSU Organic Master Gardener Program, and sits on the board of the Portland Area CSA Coalition.
Julia Niiro, Local MilkRun: Julia, founder and CEO, started MilkRun because she and other small farmers were looking for a better way to sell their farm goods, and small and mid-sized farms need all the help they can get. MilkRun is not just a delivery service, it’s a re-imagining of farm-to-you food distribution. What if a grocery store existed solely online and delivered radically local groceries – harvested, baked, and butchered to order? Conventional groceries travel an average of 1,500 miles to get to your local grocery store, while MilkRun’s groceries average 35. That means less pollution, less food waste, less cold storage, and more money kept in our farming community.
